Our mission is to improve the survival and well-being of people susceptible to or suffering from cardiovascular disease through an integrated program of biomedical and clinical research.
Our research programs are embedded in the leading academic Royal North Shore Hospital and across the Northern Sydney Local Health District, with the biomedical and translational teams housed in the state-of-the-art Kolling Institute. We are a strategic collaboration between clinicians and researchers with a diverse range of biomedical, translational, clinical and educational research expertise. This places us perfectly for bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench research.
We are committed to understanding the specific health issues faced by our patient population and community. We perform research that is relevant to improved clinical outcomes for this population. One major cross-cutting theme is myocardial infarction, with research focused on both predicting and preventing heart attacks in those at risk and on improving diagnosis and management of patients that go on to suffer heart attack, and subsequent heart failure.
The intimate co-location of state-of-the-art research facilities with a busy clinical service has attracted leading clinician-researchers, who maintain strong international collaborations with colleagues in Stanford, Oxford, Imperial College, Harvard, and Aarhus Universities. Impact has included basic mechanistic discoveries and development of novel therapies, published in highly cited journal articles, as well as major contribution to policy and the direction of clinical service provision.
Our researchers are members of national and international editorial boards and advisory committees. We are committed to recruiting and nurturing future leaders in cardiovascular research, by providing funding and mentorship opportunities to early and mid-career researchers.
Our ability to perform the early phases of discovery and clinical innovation would not have been possible without the support from Heart Research Australia (previously North Shore Heart Research Foundation), for the past 30 or more years. This charity has continuously funded two Chairs of Cardiology, as well as early and mid-career researchers, in addition to blue-sky through to clinical research. This support has been essential in achieving other funding success, particularly from the NHMRC and the National Heart Foundation.
